The AOL Throne

3. Construction - Seat

base of the chair

The seat is a slab of approximately 300 CDs that rests on a 3/8" inch thick sheet of plywood. If we had kept to the original design it would be 324 CDs but we left some out for aesthetic reasons. The CDs were aligned by making a grid on the plywood with 81 small pieces of dowel rod. The dowels were later broken off the board when the seat slab had dried.

The arms consist of CDs that were carefully glued together to form 1" thick bars. CDs aren't an overly rigid building material so the arm rests are reinforced with a thin steel bar.
